Spiceworks today released the results of a recent Carbonite-sponsored survey of SMBs concerning BDR and data protection. Overall, the survey found that 45% of SMBs have experienced significant data loss.
For the study, titled “Backing Up SMBs,” Spiceworks polled 1000 of their Spiceworks Voice of IT Market Insight Program from organizations with less than 1000 employees. As mentioned above, 45% of the SMBs polled responded that they had complete lost critical data. Of those respondents, 54% said that data was lost due to hardware failure, while human error took second place with 28%.
The study also asked respondents to specify the type of data they backup, as well as the method for backup. Overall, the study showed that SMBs spend an average of $5700 per year on their backup, and that most of the data backed up is high-sensitivity (67%), and is stored on external hard disks (58%). Tape and Replication took second and third place for method with 37% in the category of high-sensitivity data backup.
When it came to changing backup methods, 70% of respondents believed that their current method of backup was either more than sufficient or just sufficient for their needs. For cloud-based backup, 56% of those polled said they had no plans to swap, citing security issues, pricing and length of backup time as main concerns.
