This morning, Frontier Communications, a Connecticut-based telecom, announced that they have seen a marked increase in the number of attempted phone and internet scams directed at their customers. These scammers appear to be primarily going after credit card and bank account info.
In particular, Frontier customers in Michigan and West Virginia have been contacted by those impersonating company employees or local county commission officers. The company had a few good tips for handling these potential scams. To start, common sense is the most valuable resource; if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. If the person on the phone is asking for information that you normally don’t pass out on the phone, do not release information. Instead, ask them for a company contact number to verify legitimacy.
Frontier suggests registering your phone number with the National Do Not Call Registry at 888.248.4622 or reporting suspicious behavior to their local Attorney General’s office. Finally, avoid calling the scammers back at an unfamiliar area code as these numbers can often carry a steep charge when dialed.
