Survey shows SMBs need better connections to consumers

Yodle, a provider of local online marketing products and services for SMBs, released recently results of “Yodle Insights: What Consumers want from Local Businesses,” a survey on consumer behavior and preferences related to local service businesses.

yodlelogo

“We conducted this survey because we are committed to helping local businesses succeed,” Yodle President of Local Paul Bascobert said. “Although this survey confirms that local businesses are embraced by consumers, the results highlight that there are untapped opportunities for them to reach more consumers and improve the customer experience.”

Online communication was a key concern area for consumers, who identified local businesses as lacking in presence and ways to connect.

Despite a perceived lack of opportunities for connections, 82 percent of more than 6,000 consumers surveyed use local businesses and 96 percent said they believe local businesses beat national chains on personalizing service.

SIP Trunking Offers Revenue Stream for Resellers and Savings for Customers

By Pete Engler

As a reseller, offering new or cutting-edge technology products and services to your customers can be high stakes. If the gamble pays off, you will have a happy, long-term customer who brags about their (now) tech-savvy business and your insightful recommendations that brought their business up to speed. If the solution is a bust, not only could you lose the confidence of that customer but also any hope for referrals could vanish, instantly. Many resellers witnessed this type of dilemma first-hand in the late 1990s, when VoIP (voice over IP) services and SIP (session interruption protocol) trunking was first introduced and began to change the landscape in the telecommunications world. Both VoIP and SIP trunking have come a long way, but the question remains whether or not resellers are really letting the “gamble” of that once-new technology now pay dividends in their own businesses. digiumlogo

In its early days, VoIP had a reputation for being unreliable and plagued with voice quality issues. Much of this was due to infrastructure issues, such as low bandwidth connections and networks not being able to support prioritizing voice packets over data and supporting or utilizing quality of service (QoS), which is essential to VoIP. Even today, when commingling the packets of VoIP over the same networks as data, jitter and latency can be expected but can be properly managed with the right networking infrastructure. Maintaining and using networks that have adequate bandwidth and QoS ability, prioritizing the voice packets over data, are still the keys to quality VoIP service. Major strides over the last 15 years have been made in the provider networks, as well as the local area network infrastructure products to support VoIP services.

The advances in VoIP and specifically SIP trunking (an alternative to traditional PSTN services) throughout the carrier and business infrastructure markets are changing the landscape of services deployed. In fact, the fear of VoIP that once kept many businesses, and even consumers, firmly entrenched with PSTN services has been subsiding, especially in the last few years. Infonetics, an international market and research firm, predicts SIP trunking adoption will increase by 55 percent in 2015, sustaining a 50 percent or better yearly increase in the last few years.

While strides have been made in the quality of service and reliability of SIP trunking and VoIP, there is another major factor helping accelerate business adoption rates: cost savings. Gartner estimates that SIP trunking saves businesses up to 50 percent over legacy PSTN services. That type of ROI is hardly a gamble for any business.

While all of these service improvements and increased adoption rates are great for the providers of telecommunications services, the benefits extend through to resellers and integrators as well. Traditionally, the process of dealing with legacy providers has been thought of as time consuming and cumbersome. SIP trunking opens up a wider variety of providers to choose from, removing some of the aggravating barriers to upgrading services. Additionally, resellers now have the option of purchasing SIP trunking through a simplified online process, making it much easier to buy and manage the services for an end customer. Increased competition and product options also result in better service and prices for the customer, and in faster deployment times and reduced support time. For the reseller/integrator, this all translates into higher margins.

The addition of monthly recurring revenue (MRR) is a significant benefit for the reseller when offering SIP trunking in a portfolio of products and services. Most SIP providers will pay a percentage of the monthly revenue as long as the customer is attached to the service. The traditional model for telecommunications resellers/integrators consisted of selling hardware systems each month, starting at zero revenue on the first day of each month. By building a steady stream of MRR through SIP trunking and other cloud services, resellers can now offset that monthly scramble from zero.

What if customers are not convinced they want to move from their current PSTN services? SIP trunking provides a great opportunity to sell it as a backup option in the event of a PSTN related service issue. Most modern unified communications (UC) systems are capable of multiple calling path configurations or legacy PBXs can take advantage of a VoIP gateway to manage the connection and call routing between a legacy PSTN connection and SIP trunking. By positioning the SIP trunking as a ‘failover’ route for calls, the communications manager within that business will have a sense of security about the service provided to the employees, while the reseller/integrator receives the MRR. That’s a win for everyone.

Of course, for resellers, the key to providing SIP trunking services is to choose vendors that offer easy purchasing options, preferably all online, and excellent monthly commissions on the services sold to your customer. At the end of the day, it should be clear that offering VoIP and SIP trunking services is no longer a gamble. But, as a reseller, you do risk missing out on some consistent wins if MRR is not part of your business strategy.

Vera Announces Office 365 Data Protection Solution

Vera introduced today data protection for Office 365 designed to allow users to secure and track attachments through O365, Outlook and OneDrive for Business. vera

“Organizations are moving their most important tools to the cloud and enabling employees with more social, collaborative, and mobile-friendly solutions. But they lack the ability to protect files when they travel outside the corporate perimeter,” said Prakash Linga, CTO of Vera. “The most common way people share files today is through email or popular cloud storage services. The problem is that once you send an attachment or link, you’ve lost all control. Vera makes securing a file with Office 365, or even revoking access, as simple as clicking ‘Send,’ or hitting ‘Reply All’. We’ve built a recall button that actually works.”

Solution users will be able to attach security to the data in the file upon its creation, giving them the ability to immediately adjust or revoke access to documents as needed.

New Network Detective Module: RapidFire PCI Compliance Tool to Boost Profits for MSPs

RapidFire Tools Inc. launched its newest Network Detective module earlier this week in an effort to fill a market gap and offer additional profit opportunities for MSPs.

The Network Detective PCI Compliance module, as with all other RapidFire modules, fits within the Network Detective Framework and serves a unique part of the IT industry.

The PCI world is increasing in complexity and strength, CEO Mike Mittel said, and RapidFire’s product will allow MSPs to serve an estimated 95 percent of retailers subject to PCI compliance data security standards with its ability to non-invasively collect data, complete analysis and create holistic reports.

“As we move forward in the development of new modules for Network Detective, we are always in search of the most lucrative market opportunities for our MSP and IT service provider subscribers,” Mittel said.  “The merchant services marketplace has undergone significant evolution since establishment of the PCI Data Security Standard. Many of the affected retailers need to leverage technology to catch up with these standards. If a merchant is found non-compliant, they could be subject to business-killing fines, or even lose their ability to accept credit and debit cards. There is a pent-up demand for PCI Compliance risk assessments as a service, and the Network Detective reports delivers concrete value.  The new Network Detective PCI Compliance module opens a whole new avenue of profits for the managed service provider.”

MSPs will be able to provide PCI assessment, remediation and compliance services with the PCI Compliance module, and the yearly subscription fee means MSPs can run as many reports as needed, giving chances to offer free or reduced-price prospecting and audit preparation services.

Guest Blog: Cloud Definitions and Opportunity

By Marilyn Carr
Sponsored by Ingram Micro and Microsoft, this paper is part of a series developed by IDC to educate organizations on the cloud opportunity and
provide guidance on how to succeed in the cloud marketplace.

Cloud and the 3rd Platform of Computing

In 2008, IDC started to notice the IT industry was at the beginning of a hyper-disruption – one of
those massive shifts that comes along every 20–25 years. In 2011, we had seen enough to give it a
name: the 3rd Platform. The new era of technology is built on the four technology pillars for
innovation and growth: cloud, mobile, big data, and social technologies (see Figure 1).
Of these four pillars, cloud perhaps represents the biggest disruption. That's because it changes
the way companies consume and pay for access to technology. But more and more these days,
companies are realizing that, beyond a better way to consume software, the cloud offers them
brand-new ways to solve their business problems. Simply consider some of the file synchronization
services that allow someone to see his/her files on any device, anywhere. New capabilities like this
and others are unleashing the imaginations of companies across the globe, tackling business
problems with the cloud that were previously unsolvable.

This IDC Market Spotlight begins with definitions of cloud and its various forms and then goes on to
outline the vast and growing adoption of cloud technologies. If you want a better understanding of
what cloud is and how fast it's growing, please read on.

The Era of the 3rd Platform

image1ingrammicro

What Do We Mean by Cloud?

A lot of people have a general understanding of what the cloud is. But they get confused once they dive into the details. Let's first have a look at the different flavors of cloud, which will help clarify the various options available.
IDC's IT cloud services taxonomy is based on the widely used U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology cloud services categories: infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), and software as a service (SaaS) (see Table 1).

IDC's IT Cloud Services Taxonomy

image2ingrammicro

The cloud market is highly diverse. At the highest level, the two types of deployment models for cloud services are public and private:

  • Public cloud services are shared among unrelated enterprises and consumers; open to a largely unrestricted universe of potential users; and designed for a market, not a single enterprise.
  •  Private cloud services are shared within a single enterprise or an extended enterprise, with restrictions on access and level of resource dedication and defined/controlled by the enterprise (and beyond the control available in public cloud offerings). Private cloud services can be onsite or offsite and can be managed by a third party or in-house staff. A self-run private cloud is a cloud service that an enterprise owns and operates itself. The enterprise may have acquired the hardware and software components required to build a private cloud and assembled it (or had a systems integrator do so). A managed private cloud is an enterprise-owned cloud service that is operated by a third-party services firm. This is a less common model and parallels traditional onsite managed services arrangements in which the customer uses third-party staff to operate its traditional on-premise IT environment.
    • A virtual private cloud (VPC) service is a premium version of a public cloud service, with tiered options for greater privacy/security and customer control. Physical resources are not dedicated to a single customer — allowing the service provider and the customer to benefit from public cloud economics.
    • A dedicated private cloud (DPC) service is provided on dedicated/isolated physical resources to a single enterprise or an extended enterprise.

Two other often-discussed cloud services deployment model terms are hybrid cloud and community cloud:

  •  Hybrid cloud: The term hybrid cloud is used to describe the consolidated coordination/management of multiple cloud services. Hybrid cloud services include "public/public," "public/private," and "private/private" combinations. IDC does not classify collaborations between cloud services and non-as-a-service IT as hybrid cloud services.
  • Community cloud: A "community cloud" is a multi-enterprise cloud service that's been commissioned by, and is controlled by, a group of enterprises that have shared needs, control/specify the functionality of the services, and share the cost burden.

image3ingrammicro

The cloud services deployment variables include:

  • Where the cloud service is located (on the customer's site or at a third-party service provider)
  • Whether the cloud service is consumed as a shared or a dedicated service (public versus private)
  • The type of provisioning (completely dedicated, completely shared, or private cloud provisioned from the public cloud shared resource pool)
  • The management options, which may include both internal IT and external service providers

Consideration of all the aforementioned variables means there are several pros and cons to weigh before deciding what shape your cloud solution will take, and the context of the variables will likely change over time. That's why it is important to create a road map for incorporating cloud into your technology portfolio, something that is best developed in consultation with a cloud subject matter expert.

IDC also describes cloud services through the key attributes that an offering must manifest to end users of the service (see Figure 3). Cloud services require support of all of these attributes. This checklist of attributes can be used when evaluating cloud offerings from potential service providers to ensure that you are actually getting what you think you are getting.

image4ingrammicro

Current Cloud Adoption and Projected Growth

Cloud is an essential part of the much broader, and bigger, impact of the shift in IT and its applications. Big data, mobile, and social technology solutions are all heavily dependent on the cloud services delivery model. In effect, these solutions can't exist without the cloud model as the underlying platform. In turn, cloud services growth is highly dependent on the other three 3rd Platform technologies. Look for growth of cloud services to be positively impacted by breakthroughs in mobile, big data, and social technologies and solutions starting this year and beyond. Conversely, major breakthroughs in these areas will require (and drive) major investments in cloud technologies and services.

We now are entering what IDC calls the "innovation stage" of the "3rd Platform" (and cloud) marketplace — in which we predict that a tripling community of developers will create a 10-fold increase in the number of new killer cloud-based solutions in the next four to five years. Many of these "killer apps" will be innovative and disruptive industry-focused solutions, created and marketed on industry-specific cloud services platforms and marketplaces, run by leaders in each industry seeking to attract communities of thousands of innovators to create valuable new services. Line-of-business executives will drive many of these cloud investments as cloud services become much more valuable and strategic to enterprises. This is very good news for those adopting cloud solutions because it means they will continue to benefit from innovations that will spur productivity and strategic advantage, enhancing the return on investment.

The "greater cloud market," including cloud services and all the hardware, software, and services enabling cloud services, will hit $118 billion in 2015 and grow to over $200 billion by 2018. Public IT cloud services spending, a major part of the greater cloud market, accounted for $56.6 billion in 2014 and will reach over $127 billion in 2018 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 22.8%, or about six times the rate of overall IT market growth.

In 2018, public IT cloud services will drive nearly 20% of the $640 billion aggregate spending in applications, development and deployment tools, infrastructure software, storage, and servers. Collectively, public IT cloud services will account for 55% of spending growth. Clearly, cloud is a very significant part of how companies are consuming technology today.

SaaS, which accounted for 70% of 2014 cloud services spending, will continue to dominate public IT cloud services spending, as most customer demand is, understandably, at the application level. PaaS and cloud storage services will be the fastest-growing IT cloud services categories, driven by major upticks in developer cloud services adoption and big data–driven solutions. IaaS will remain the second-largest IT cloud services category — boosted largely by cloud storage's 31% CAGR from 2014 to 2018 — even as intense price competition and looming consolidation pressure IaaS price points.

North America accounted for 68.1% of IT cloud services spending in 2014, but that share will drop to 61.6% by 2018. In Europe, the second-largest region, share will rise from 20.7% in 2014 to 24.2% in 2018 (see Figure 4).

image5ingrammicro

Essential Guidance

Cloud is a substantial transformative force impacting all areas of IT supply, composition, and consumption for all buyers and sellers. IT buyers are shifting steadily toward cloud-also and cloud-first strategies. In fact, IDC predicts that 70% of CIOs will adopt a cloud-first approach by 2016. Nearly all are reconsidering their IT best practices to embrace hybrid cloud construction and operations, secure data management, end-to-end governance, updated IT skills, improved multivendor sourcing, and a host of other key topics. The ballooning of supply — a huge increase in the number and diversity of cloud services available — is leading to vastly increasing customer demand as IT decision makers look well beyond automation (IT's traditional realm) and into new possibilities for data management, customer and employee engagement, application development and testing, and a range of other net-new possibilities. Smart IT leaders will focus on this guidance.

The cloud has changed the fundamental nature of computing and how business gets done, and it will continue to do so through 2020. In fact, IDC predicts that, by 2020, clouds will stop being referred to as "public" and "private," and ultimately they will stop being called clouds altogether. It is simply the new way business is done and IT is provisioned.

LogicNow Launches Unique Per-device Pricing Model for MAX Backup

LogicNow announced today the launch of a new per-device pricing strategy for MAX Backup, making it the first DRaaS solution to be charged per device for workstations and servers instead of by data usage.

The switch in pricing is designed to better support MSPs and their customers, increasing predictability and consistency of cost from month to month.

“Per-device pricing enables our MSP partners to know their margins when quoting new business, making it much easier to sell. Regardless of growth in data, MSPs can deliver a differentiated Disaster Recovery as a Service offering with a predictable price point,” said Chris Groot, VP Sales, MAX Backup & Recovery. “Today, we have more than 4,500 IT service providers using MAX Backup. Having spoken with many of them, there is a big appetite for this charging model. We expect to grow this area of our business tenfold in the next two years.”

A flexible charging model based on data usage for customers backing up small amounts of data will also be available to offer continued, affordable support for SMBs.

Windows 10: Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue

July marks a month of milestones for software and operating system developer Microsoft, with Windows Server 2003 end-of-service July 14 and the Windows 10 release July 29.

After the June 1 announcement of Windows 10 general availability, users and businesses have just under two months to wait for the newest incarnation of the Windows operating system.

Both the tech and consumer worlds were buzzing before the release of Windows 8, excited to see what Microsoft could do to create a modern interface. It didn’t take long, though, for many to regret their installation of the new OS.

It was missing the trademark start menu, and despite minor updates to Windows 8 since 2012, the apps remained difficult and cumbersome to navigate. While it held marketing value for the Xbox brand with games and branding placed left and right, it missed the mark in persuading users Microsoft had the operating system to beat.

Something Old

Microsoft announced it will bring back the start menu in Windows 10, a widely welcomed return to tradition. The new menu combines the placement of the menu from operating systems up to Windows 7, but retains much of the tile format from Windows 8.

By keeping parts of the Windows 8 system and appearance, it seems the design of Windows 10 is part of a greater Microsoft strategy to create a similar user interface experience between smartphones, tablets and computers.

Something New

Internet Explorer is out, and Microsoft Edge is in. Internet Explorer, for many years the premier Internet platform webpages were built to work on, is being phased out by Microsoft for a new browser. Perhaps the most interesting feature distinguishing Microsoft Edge is a note-taking feature in which users can write or type notes directly on websites.

Something Borrowed

Siri began speaking to iOS users in 2011, helping them find directions to their hotel or the definition of “interface.” Microsoft released personal assistant Cortana on the Windows Phone platform in April 2014 in an attempt to meet the bar set by its competitor, and is now pushing ahead of Apple with the introduction of Cortana into Windows 10.

Cortana has been directly transferred to the Windows 10 operating system, with a mirrored appearance and identical functions.

Something Blue

Those not sure what the transition will bring them shouldn’t feel blue—much is still yet to be revealed about Windows 10, and SMB Nation and Windows10update.com are taking 50 people behind the curtain in five U.S. cities through a Microsoft-sponsored Windows 10 preview tour.

Microsoft seeks to marry tradition and innovation through Windows 10, and a question remains: Will the marriage last?

Better Call an MSP Part 5: Identifying the Stage of your MSP - Where Do you Fit?

By Raymond Vrabel, Director, Technical Account Management, Continuum Managed IT Services

The fifth installment of a new monthly blog series offering tips and best practices on various ways MSPs can help their SMB clients work through the most challenging daily business issues.

In last month’s installment of, “Better Call an MSP,” I discussed concerns on how telecommunications companies (or telecoms) are being deemed a threat to solution providers. This time, I’d like to talk about the future, rather than the present, and more specifically, “life after managed services.” I’ve had several conversations at recent industry events where this topic has surfaced. I have spoken with partners who seem to fall into one of three categories when it comes to what stage they are in with their MSP, and I’d like to explore the specific stages of a MSP business.

1.) Ready to Sell the MSP? As I delve into the first category, it’s almost as if I’m describing a stock portfolio. Think about when you invest in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, etc. for your retirement or other reasons, and you look at the types of funds that offer aggressive, moderate or conservative growth. The same can be said when it comes to managed services. If you are at a crossroads when it comes to your company, and you’ve been grinding away for many years, then it might be time for you to find your best offer and sell. However, if this is the path you choose and identify with, it doesn’t mean you have to walk away completely. I know many MSPs, who after creating and building their businesses, wanted to focus on other ambitions, but still wanted to be involved. It is an option to sell, but while you may not be involved in the daily operations, you still may want to have a say in big business decisions, for instance on a chairman level. There are many MSPs who play this role, and they have the freedom to capture their true entrepreneurial spirit while still being involved in the original company they created. After all, a true entrepreneur never really stops thinking, developing and creating, right?

Some signs to help identify you may be ready to sell are:

  • You are optimizing your company and grooming it to go lean and mean for the highest valuation possible.
  • You feel your heart just isn’t in it anymore, and you find yourself looking at new opportunities.
  • You attend industry trade shows/events and you spend more time on the golf course rather than networking at sessions and on the show floor.

2.) Status Quo/Moderate Growth: While I admit that the expression “just coasting by” usually has a negative connotation, in this situation, it can be thought of as your MSP is simply “status quo” and that can be a good thing. If you identify with this category, you aren’t at a point where you are ready to hang up your hat and sell the company. However, you aren’t looking to expand by 300 percent in the next year and add several new clients and staff; you are happy with how the business is running with current clients and staff. You also don’t hold on to a “noisy” client (or take on a potentially difficult one) just to make money or to grow. Being operationally sound is what’s most important to you.

You may fall in this category if:

  • You are generally happy with the daily activities of your business.
  • Growing your business 10 to 15 percent per year (rather than 200 percent) is a solid win for you and your team.
  • You don’t take on new clients (or keep difficult ones) just for the sake of extra money.
  • You are happy with your current lifestyle, and while your company is doing well, you aren’t looking to be the biggest company in your market.

3.) Aggressive Growth: With this category, I would say it is the easiest to see right away, because with this one, you are constantly thinking about your business, how you can make it better, and how you can grow and make more money. MSPs that are looking for aggressive growth set high expectations for both themselves and their staff. They are usually looking to grow the company in the 200-300 percent, and are constantly focused on fine-tuning their services for current clients, while developing strategies to take on new clients. Many who are in this category often look outside of their immediate geographical area to expand, and many others are doing this more and more. They are at the forefront of expanding their business by either partnering with other local, like-minded MSPs or through acquisition.

You may identify with this category if:

  • You map out a plan to aggressively grow your business within the next two years.
  • You start to look for acquisition opportunities within your local market.
  • You also feel like you are ready to expand beyond your local market and begin seeking out MSPs in other geographical areas that are ripe for acquisition.
  • You are focused on the next wave of customer success.

Regardless of what stage your MSP is currently in, it’s important to evaluate your goals periodically. Be cognizant of where you want to head in your career or whether you are nearing retirement and think about necessary preparations, regardless of the stage.

#WIN10: NYC done; LA next

By Harry Brelsford, Founder and Chairman, SMB Nation and O365nation

Just as Microsoft confirmed July 29 as the date for General Availability (see our coverage here), the SMB Nation team was madly racing to launch our first Windows 10 workshop in New York City this past Tuesday. By any measure, it was a success as the goal for each city (five total in June) is to have 50 highly- qualified MSPs participate in a pilot program and focus group. The results will be used to craft Windows 10 strategy in Microsoft FY16 starting in July 2015. Our expert speaker, Onuora Amobi from Windows 10 Update is presenting in all cities and brings extensive knowledge to the table. Frankly, he knows more than you do about Windows 10.nyc june 2 2015 edited

The crowd of 51 sign-ups in NYC was enthusiastically engaged, to say the least. The conversations ranged from the technical dimensions to what I’d call the geopolitical debate of Microsoft not caring enough for the small partner. All of the feedback was noted and will be part of the final report for Microsoft.

Next up is Los Angeles, Calif., this coming TUESDAY June 9, so sign up here: http://www.o365nation.com/launched-independent-windows-10-preview-tour-set-to-visit-5-u-s-cities-this-june/

You should also check the dates for our workshops in Fort Lauderdale, Austin and Redmond. All of these occur in June 2015.

D&H Helps VARs to Outfit the Healthy Office

It’s no longer just walking to work—some industry companies are now suggesting walking at work to limit physical stagnation.

Computer products and consumer electronics distributor D&H Distributing supports this, and announced it will offer a height-adjustable desk, ergonomic products and fitness-related items to VARs, after continued in-house efforts to encourage a healthy office.

“The World Health Organization recently identified physical inactivity as the fourth largest killer worldwide, superseding even obesity. Such reports are driving companies to promote more dynamic and comfortable postures for their employees over the course of the day,” said Jeff Davis, senior vice president of sales at D&H Distributing. “Our own management acknowledged this, and realized the trend might point to a new sales opportunity for resellers. Much like our ‘green’ initiatives, this campaign can deliver benefits beyond just technology. It can contribute to the wellness of the workforce.”

Innovative’s Winston Sit/Stand Workstation, adopted by some D&H employees through a company initiative, adjusts in height to accommodate sitting and standing attitudes and negate some effects of a seated working environment.

D&H also offers wearable health monitors from Fitbit and Striiv, ergonomically-designed computer accessories from D&H partners including Microsoft, ParcSlope and SIIG, and complementary products such as the Conair heated massage seat cushion.

Guest Blog: Building a Cloud Practice: The Role of IT Services

By Marilyn Carr, sponsored by Ingram Micro and Microsoft

The Evolution of IT Services

IT consulting and integration services and custom application development are core revenue components for most solution providers. Unless they were born in the cloud, IT consultants usually add cloud-related technology and services to their portfolios rather than do a wholesale replacement of their traditional services. This is also in line with the reality that most cloud implementations live in an environment where there is a mix of on-premise, hosted, and IaaS, PaaS, or SaaS technologies.

This IDC Market Spotlight provides some key insights based on IDC's discussions with solution IDCproviders that have built successful cloud revenue streams and have IT services as an important part of their business model. These insights are not intended to be silver bullets but rather points to ponder as you consider the cloud strategy that will work best for your unique business and circumstances.

Strategies for IT Services in the Cloud

There are several ways in which IT consulting and managed services can adapt to take advantage of cloud business opportunities, and there is no doubt that opportunity abounds. In the sections that follow, we describe some of the approaches that solution providers report have been successful.

Be a Cloud Adviser

The cloud has reached a level of maturity where more and more business applications and functions can be comfortably transitioned. But not every aspect of a customer's computing environment is necessarily ready for an optimal deployment in the cloud. For many customers, simply keeping up with the number and nature of cloud options available to them is overwhelming. Solution providers are in a unique position to help customers understand how they may benefit from transitioning their applications or infrastructure to the cloud as well as take advantage of net-new functionality that only the cloud can provide.

Solution providers can play a key role in explaining cloud opportunities and challenges, and translating the technology industry's jargon and buzzwords into business terms that customers understand, perhaps in the form of an initial consulting engagement to develop a strategy for the cloud based on the customer's existing infrastructure and capabilities. One approach is to focus on the near-term ROI and savings benefit of the cloud while also helping map out a long-term strategy to transform and modernize a customer's overall technology position. As one solution provider explained:

"Clients rely on us not only to position the cloud architecture but to validate that it's going to work as described. We have a lot of due diligence to do in making sure that all the failover mechanisms are there and that we account for every possible scenario."

Whether or not you can charge for these initial types of cloud advisory engagements is a key question. Some solution providers can charge a fee, while others assign the cost to the presales effort, knowing the potential value of a long-term recurring revenue customer.

Focus on Iterative Consulting

IDC believes the days of the large, monolithic IT consulting and integration project are numbered, if not already gone. The emergence of cloud and other rapid deployment technologies, coupled with the economic downturn that permanently squeezed budgets, means that most organizations do not have the capacity for or interest in taking on enormous projects. Also consider that line-of-business managers are playing a much larger role in IT investments, and their return-on-technology lens is measured in weeks and not months or years.

Many solution providers are adapting to this changing reality by designing their integrations to be more agile and iterative, delivering smaller "modules" of consulting, which show immediate results, and then moving on to the next logical steps. This gives customers control over project timing and costs and allows them to see the benefit of the first phase before committing to the next phase. IDC has found that in the long term, solution providers can make the same amount of revenue over the lifetime of a customer while defining and executing consulting projects in smaller chunks.

In many cases, cloud solutions serve as the perfect door opener for these deeper engagements because of the ability to start small and build out from there. The ongoing nature of this process, resulting in a number of smaller successful implementations along the way, can lead to a tighter, higher-satisfaction relationship with the customer and uncover a continuous string of opportunities.

Shift the Needle Toward Integration

The very nature of cloud-based and SaaS applications means they are up and running very rapidly and solution providers typically do not need to spend as much time modifying and configuring them. This gives IT consultants an opportunity to focus on higher-value services that ensure a customer's applications work together and communicate efficiently and places integrators in a very favorable position.

Ensuring good communications, and seamless data management, among disparate applications is a top priority for most businesses, and this includes integrations between existing on-premise applications, legacy on-premise applications that are being moved to the cloud, and new cloud-based applications that are introduced into the environment. IDC sees the role of integrating applications, and deciding which applications make sense in which delivery models, taking on greater prominence for many IT consultants and integrators. The requirement for integration also elevates the importance of technical architecture because combining cloud with on-premise solutions may involve heterogeneous technologies.

Be Your Customer's IT Department

While one approach to the cloud is to differentiate yourself by focusing on an industry or a specific business process, another is to stick to providing exceptional IT-focused solutions with a high service level for the right price. Some partners nickname their approach "IT department as a service."

There is a wide continuum of IT support services a solution provider can offer, from fielding ad hoc help desk calls to proactive maintenance and everything in between. Although it has always been a good business model, providing a comprehensive outsourced IT management and support service makes even more sense with the cloud. That's because cloud-based outsourcing involves much less capital investment from and lower operating costs for solution providers than on-premise outsourcing. Solution providers that adopt a cloud-based approach can replace declining or disappearing installation and configuration revenue with SaaS and IaaS solutions.

Many solution providers are already recognizing the potential in building out managed services capabilities. However, that doesn't mean it is too late and that the field will be too crowded to make an impact. There are a number of different approaches and tactics that provide lots of room for differentiation, from providing remote monitoring and management of the client's environment to providing outsourced help desk support, including the configuration and ongoing maintenance (moves, adds, changes, etc.) of applications. As two solution providers noted:

"First, it was cost beneficial to move the customer's business continuity services to the cloud. It is sort of a precursor. Now we're in the process of moving their phone systems to the cloud. This year and next, a lot of our focus is trying to move infrastructure."

"Managed services for us is managing all aspects of an organization's IT infrastructure, whether it be their help desk, their email, their servers, or anything else related to IT. We also offer a service where our president or our vice president becomes their virtual CIO. We help with the customer's vendors and contract relations. We don't make the decisions for them, but we're their adviser if they have any questions."

Managed correctly, this type of relationship can be greatly beneficial in terms of the ability to build long-term relationships with customers that can be continually expanded into new dimensions. In the words of one solution provider:

"One thing about being the IT department is it's a lot easier to go to the customer and say, 'You have to do this project.' In the old model, we had to sell them on it. Now, they know what's going on. They understand. We're a main department in the company. We're telling the other departments, 'If you want to keep growing, you have to do this project.'"

Leverage Remote Delivery

More and more solution providers are figuring out how to execute remote delivery of their IT services, because the less they have to be onsite with the customer, the less expensive it is to deliver the service. Senior engineers can provide oversight for several projects simultaneously rather than being tied up for months on end at a single client. This promotes scalability and also provides a training opportunity for new staff. As two solution providers said:

"The cloud reduces our support costs — which is our No.1 cost — while giving our clients better technology. We can be more remote and mobile while we're providing a higher level of service to our clients. That's from our business perspective. The customer also wins because they get better uptime, scalability, and mobility."

"It's shifted our business model quite dramatically in how our engineers are able to support our clients because we are able to do far more remotely."

For one, staff costs can go down by spreading out the higher-paid technical architects across more clients and using more cost-effective resources to execute on the bulk of the work. In addition, solution providers that are effectively using automation to increase their efficiency can improve their gross profit margins.

A center of excellence "remote delivery center" can be used to cover many different geographies without incurring travel costs. Cloud helps enable highly repeatable engagements, which is key to profitability. Many solution providers are using Microsoft Intune as a key tool in the transition to managed services and remote delivery. The virtually centralized approach also makes it possible to optimize staffing levels and train younger talent on specific repeatable tasks. Plan remote delivery methods with lots of leverage in mind, and plan for exactly how staff will be mentored to perform well in the high-leverage model.

Standardize Your Offerings and Pricing

Many solution providers are becoming proficient at creating and selling ongoing services that fit the recurring revenue model. These services were often previously sold on a one-off or transaction basis. The most obvious examples are around support relationships where a solution provider offers a bundle of support hours for a particular customer for a discounted rate every month. A prepurchase of a bank of monthly hours establishes a commitment to spend a certain amount as well as gives the customer peace of mind that someone will be available when it has a need. A similar scenario that's growing in popularity is for ad hoc professional services or even application development services. These services could help with security or Microsoft SharePoint administration or with workflow design and development. The customer benefits by securing its favorite systems engineer or developer, while the solution provider benefits from a profitable, ongoing revenue stream.

Successful solution providers report that one key to success is the ability to offer a menu of prepackaged offerings that can adapt to various client needs, from a basic level that allows metered consumption of support to a "gold plated," all-encompassing outsourcing and support service. Solution providers pursuing this model engage customers on a subscription or retainer basis to provide both proactive and responsive support for the client's entire IT infrastructure.

Fixed-price services are a great way to go as customers feel better about signing up to a scope and a price that are set. You just have to make sure the scope is clear and all of your underlying costs are known and stable. You also have to prepare for some customers that may not be a good fit for your offering and even politely decline their business and move on to those that are a better fit.

If a customer is going to say "no" in the end, it's better to get to that realization sooner than later. As one solution provider explained:

"We are now doing more and more fixed-price engagements all around SharePoint. Much more off the shelf, much more 'cloud' in its kind of style — its sales style and provisioning. What we do is what we do. We do it really well. And if that doesn't suit you, that's fine."

There is still lots of room for time and materials project work within the context of a cloud/recurring revenue business model. That's because customers will often need strategy advice, process redesign, or migration planning and mitigation. However, if you want to stay true to the business model, you might have to walk away from one-off project work for companies that are not currently annuity customers to avoid reverting to "peak and valley" revenue.

Essential Guidance

A change as significant as cloud always brings a need for readjustment or even reinvention of the way you do business. In terms of IT services, many things can change.

Cloud is prompting a move from extremely customized services to packaged IT service offerings. But don't confuse this with undifferentiated services. It is important to design the services "menu" with a view toward how it will provide both customer value and competitive advantage.

Consultant roles and staffing will need to evolve. In many cases, senior staff will need to interact more with line-of-business staff and have more true "consultative" conversations in the course of delivering services. They will also need to spend more time managing and mentoring highly leveraged delivery resources.

The nature of managed services will change with cloud, but traditional activities are quite compatible with cloud and may in fact be a catalyst. Managed service providers (MSPs) understand ongoing support and recurring revenue, so they will fit into cloud more easily than other types of companies.

However, MSPs should embrace cloud and not worry about how it may cannibalize existing services.

Relayware Celebrates One Million Channel Partners on its Platform

Relayware, a SaaS-based provider of Partnering Automation software, announced earlier this week the addition of the one-millionth partner on its Partner Cloud. It attributed much of its success and recent growth to international expansion and demand from VC-backed SaaS companies.Relayware

Relayware works to extend market reach and accelerate revenue growth without increasing customer acquisition costs.

“The nexus of cloud computing, big data analytics, collaborative working and mobile applications is redefining how companies recruit, enable and motivate their channel partners,” Bob Mann, Chairman and CEO of Relayware, said. “For larger enterprises with established partner programs, it’s enabling them to automate channel marketing, sales, training and operational processes, so they can be more strategic with partners. But what’s really exciting is the recent wave of young, VC-backed SaaS companies that are turning to Relayware as the foundation for their new partner programs that they’re building to scale quickly and drive exponential growth.”

Relayware has doubled its customer base and experienced a 30 percent underlying growth in monthly recurring revenue in the past year. It estimates the indirect channel market is worth $800 million, and expects expansion into manufacturing, energy and telecommunications and increased use of indirect distribution channels to increase market worth to more than $3 billion by 2020.

How BlackBerry is being reinvented as the secure business software provider it’s been

By Patrick Houston, long-time industry leader and founder of Media Architects

Who’d have thunk it? Not me. Or not until Harry and I had a recent conversation with Blackberry’s David Moellenkamp.BBRY2674 Cloud Blog Banner

Remember the days when every blockbuster business or government movie character clicked away on a BlackBerry keyboard? Gone. And for a time everything at the Waterloo, Canada, company seemed to go from bad to worse. Its every attempt to reverse its slide — never mind regaining its stature — seemed tone deaf to its customer base, never more symptomatic than its ill-begotten launch of the Playbook tablet.

Even BlackBerry itself admitted to very crux of its challenge in what actually became a prize-winning PR campaign built around the slogan a “From Relic to Relevant.” Relic is right. Like so many others, I figured the company was headed the way of those ghosts of business history like Digital Equipment, Palm and Kodak.

But then we talked to Moellenkamp. Ever since John Chen came aboard as CEO last year, BlackBerry has been showing glimmering signs of a comeback. Here’s mainly why: It’s actively and publicly dispelling any lingering delusions it has of being a leading smartphone maker. Self-awareness is, after all, the first step. Instead, it’s embracing its consummate natural strength as a provider of secure communications services (Stick to your knitting!).

By way of introduction, Moellenkamp is BlackBerry’s executive director of Enterprise Solutions Development, one of its four key operating units. A Devices group is still one, but it’s outweighed by three others, all revolving around enterprise software services. Across the board, the company’s moves are being dictated, Moellenkamp said, by BlackBerry’s newfound focus on its core strengths of security, productivity, communication, and collaboration for business.

But those are just words. The real issue: Can Blackberry execute on them? But Moellenkamp offers us a few dots. And if its audience can connect with them, well, it just might be on the verge of becoming a player yet again:

Consider just three:

  • BlackBerry is moving to the cloud. The company has a gem in its mobile-device-management platform, BES12. I have no idea what its name has to do with product. I do have an idea — a good one — that BES12 is a gem. Businesses, especially in highly-regulated sectors like healthcare, remain consummately concerned about data security, and it doesn’t take a genius to understand what vulnerabilities mobile devices present. Moving it to the cloud promises to make the EMM-platform promises that much better. It’ll make it accessible and affordable faster to more companies, especially small-to-medium-sized ones. And to make it more accessible to a wider swath of businesses, it’s going to have to be easier to use. BlackBerry says it is, but we’ll have to see because, after all, like beauty, ease-of-use in is the eye of the beholder.
  • BlackBerry is playing in the Internet of Things. Get this: Secure BlackBerry software powers embedded computer chips in cars, factories, and medical devices. Who knew? The company has data centers around the world transacting 35 petabytes of mobile data a month. It handles peer-to-peer connections with 700 mobile and partner networks. As more things connect to more other things, security will become an exponential concern. Yep, you’ve got it. BlackBerry has a big ace of spades in its hand.
  • BlackBerry is acquiring more advanced security technologies. In April, it bought an Israeli company called WatchDox. Even though endpoint security has become all the rage, WatchDox adds a smart, new precaution to the mix: It embeds security into the document itself, allowing it to “travel” with the file no matter where it goes. You can protect, share, and work with it on any device. You can see where it is at any moment. You can control who can edit, copy, print, and forward. Most of all, you can revoke access or delete a file remotely. And by the way, as a company name, WatchDox, I get. Dox, doc, dog, nice.

BlackBerry just reported its second consecutive profitable quarter, and its customer loyalty scores have spiked. It was named the biggest gainer in an annual ranking of 220 big brands, released in March.

It’s too early to declare a comeback. According to reports as recently as May 5, CEO Chen was opining the challenge of convincing his own employees that BlackBerry isn’t a smartphone company anymore. (Hey, disbelievers, have you been hibernating? Apple, Samsung, Google, and Microsoft have won that battle. But take warm comfort. You’re in good company. Nokia, Ericsson, HTC, and Sony are also-rans too.)

Nevertheless, the glimmers are bright enough to suggest that BlackBerry shouldn’t be written off as a has-been — and should be considered as channel partner that can add a suite of secure business software services to your portfolio.

“The beauty of Cloud applications and VoIP phones systems are that they are located in secure data centers, and vendors take responsibility for owning, configuring, and managing them,” Cora Cloud, Digium content marketing specialist, said.

Full-featured Unified Communication solution Switchvox Cloud, designed for SMBs, includes UC features in a cloud format, which Digium suggested is the superior option for SMB phone systems.

According to the infographic, 82 percent of companies reduced costs by moving to the cloud, and cloud-based phone systems also saved energy and server space.
