We recently saw a community blog from Mary Jo Foley, Contributing Author, ZDNet that covered the recent announcement from Microsoft regarding the SkyDrive name change. Looking more into this, we found that the name change came about as the result of a legal trademark battle between Microsoft and British Sky Broadcasting over the use of the word “sky.”
As many of you remember, SkyDrive came about in 2007, and Microsoft recently reported that the system has approximately 250 million global customers to date. With this announcement, SkyDrive will become OneDrive, and SkyDrive Pro will become OneDrive for Business. For existing customers, there will be no change beyond the name, and no interruption in service. For more information about OneDrive, please visit the official announcement here.
