Good morning, SMB Nation Community. The SMB Nation Team would like to wish you all a very Happy Veterans Day (US) and take a moment to thank the Veterans in our community and beyond!
This holiday in the US shares its roots with Armistice Day and Remembrance Day across the globe, first celebrated on November 11, 1919. There was a slight change, however, in 1945, when World War II veteran Raymond Weeks moved to expand the holiday to recognize veterans of all wars. The nomenclature change then happened in 1954, where the word “Armistice” was replaced by the word “Veterans.”
Closer to home, Geoff Brelsford, son of founder Harry Brelsford, is potentially a future veteran. He actively applied to attend the US Naval Academy in Annapolis this year after finishing high school. He worked very hard to prepare himself including academic, physical fitness and securing three Congressional recommendations. Unfortunately his offer to serve wasn’t accepted in round one and he’s moved on to attend CalPoly studying engineering. However, and here is the good news, he intends to apply again to Annapolis. Hopefully the second time is the charm!
There are many ways to thank a veteran today! You can call family members, send cards, volunteer your time at a VA hospital or donate to a number of charitable organizations aimed at helping returning veterans find jobs, get the emotional and physical support they need, and more!
