Gartner Releases Q1 2013 IT Spending Forecast Results

Gartner LogoGartner, Inc. yesterday released the primary results of their Worldwide IT Spending Forecast for 2013. The study, which is based on sales from thousands of global vendors, found that total IT spending is expected to reach $3.8 trillion in 2013, which is a 4.1% increase over 2012.

According to Gartner analysts, the area with the highest growth rate (7.9%) for 2013 is expected to be Devices, which includes all PCs, mobile phones, tablets and printers. The total spending for this division is forecast to reach $718 billion this year. Telecom services, on the other hand, though expected to see the lowest rate of growth at 2%, will remain the top service in terms of spending, with a projected $1688 billion for 2013. Finally, Data Center systems will remain in the bottom position for spending, with $146 billion.

John Lovelock, Research Vice President, Gartner, offered a few explanations for the study results in a press release yesterday: “The Nexus of Forces — social, mobile, cloud and information — are reshaping spending patterns across all of the IT sectors that Gartner forecasts. Consumers and enterprises will continue to purchase a mix of IT products and services; nothing is going away completely. However, the ratio of this mix is changing dramatically and there are clear winners and losers over the next three to five years, as we see more of a transition from PCs to mobile phones, from servers to storage, from licensed software to cloud, or the shift in voice and data connections from fixed to mobile.”

Gartner will host a webinar on Tuesday, April 2 at 8 am PDT to provide more in-depth analysis of this Q1 2013 IT Forecast report. For more information, please visit the site here.
