VoIPReview.org yesterday released a guide with the three questions business owners who are thinking of swapping to a VoIP solution have asked their community. The organization, an informative online VoIP resource, looked at the differences between the two main types of VoIP, Hosted PBX and IP PBX with SIP Trunking, to answer the three questions below.
The organization opened their post with a citation of an FCC prediction that analog (PSTN) phone systems would be phased out over the next five years. To help business owners who are already thinking of VoIP solutions, but not sure as to which service will be a good fit, VoIPReview.org answered the following questions:
- How many simultaneous calls does your organization expect? VoIPReview.org explained that for standard hosted PBX systems, organizations can expect to pay per extension, while for on-premise PBX, businesses will be paying by how many simultaneous calls they receive. In short, if a business wants or expects a large volume of simultaneous calls, the hosted PBX solution is a better fit; while a company with relatively low simultaneous call volume and need for a lot of extensions may want to go with the on-premise option.
- How can we easily manage monthly subscriptions? VoIPReview.org said that hosted PBX solutions are typically $20-$35 per user per month, with rates going down as more extensions are added, while SIP trunking, which is cost based on port number, may go from $55/month for a small number to $400/month for unlimited ports.
- How do we handle repair and maintenance, and what are the costs? The organization explained that for on-premise solutions, the business is fully responsible for any repair and replacement of hardware/software on their system. For those business owners who would prefer not to manage maintenance, the hosted PBX is a better fit, as the service provider will monitor network health.
