Trend Micro Releases Cyber Security Concern Predictions

Earlier this week, Trend Micro Incorporated released its report on security predictions for 2014. “Blurring Boundaries: Trend Micro Security Predictions for 2014 and Beyond” outlines top areas of concern for cyberattack, particularly through mobile banking and targeting infrastructure attacks.

“We see the sophistication of threats expanding at a rapid pace, which will impact individuals, businesses and governments alike,” said Raimund Genes, CTO, Trend Micro. “From mobile banking vulnerabilities and targeted attacks, to growing privacy concerns and the potential of a major breach each month, 2014 promises to be a prolific year for cybercrime. We will also see the evolution of the IoE, which serves as a prelude to the surge in technological advancements as the decade closes.”

Trend Micro explained that the projected rise of mobile banking threats, primarily via “man-in-the-middle” attacks, will coincide with a rise in the amount of people doing mobile banking. In fact, Trend Micro predicted that mobile payment transactions will reach up to $2.59 billion next year. As a result, the current methods of protecting mobile banking transactions, like the two-step verification, will become inadequate.

Additional cyber threats are predicted to come from increasingly sophisticated click-jacking, spear phishing and watering hole attacks. The report also spoke to the dangers posed by outdated software, such as Windows XP and Java 6, both of which will become a major target for cybercriminals next year. Finally, the report touched on the rise of Internet of Everything, which Trend Micro predicts will be a game changer in the personal technology field.
