Readers will recall that SMB Nation is an active member of the Microsoft “Voices for Innovation” (VFI) political trade association, and I’ve written many a blog about why you should be as well, regardless of your political affiliation. It’s called LEADERSHIP!
One way you can demonstrate your leadership is to consider the following political opportunities:
- Hour of Code: Based on the national initiative led by Code.org, this is part of the December 9-16, 2013 Computer Science Education Week. I am participating in two ways. First, I’m holding an Hour of Code webinar this coming Thursday from 11AM to describe the initiative better and how you can join in. Then I’m actually programming Saleforce 101 right before your eyes. Then on December 9, 2013, I’ll be repeating the session for K-5 students at The Island School on Bainbridge Island. It’s my right and duty to participate in this. What a great thing! To join the webinar, please sign up here: http://www.smbnation.com/webinars.
- STEM: Click over to the VFI Action Center to do the right thing. America faces a chronic shortage of skilled workers qualified in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The U.S. Senate has taken positive action to address this challenge by passing legislation (S. 744) that includes high-skilled immigration reform and the creation of a national STEM education fund, paid for only by businesses that use high-skilled visas and green cards, not individual taxpayers or other businesses. Now we need the U.S. House of Representatives to take action, too. Please write to your U.S. Representative to voice your support for high-skilled immigration and the national STEM fund. It all starts here.
