Catching up with Carbonite

CARBONITE logoI had a few moments this week to catch up with David Maffei, Vice President of Global Channel Sales and Jim Crook, Sr. Communications Manager, Carbonite, and we discussed the company’s server backup product updates, customer acquisition, and the recent corporate move.

David began our call by letting me know that Carbonite recently added hybrid backup for Microsoft Exchange Online in Office 365 to their server backup product. Why? Well, as David explained, they received a lot of requests from partners and customers, wanting more functionality. Carbonite’s server backup product is currently their most popular solution, and David described the latest upgrades as: “We basically had a bonfire and threw some gasoline on it.”

As many of you may know, Carbonite is a long-time partner of Microsoft, Amazon and Google. I asked David if he had a roadmap for additional integrations with Azure, CRM, etc. He replied that, in a successful Microsoft world, there will definitely be an expansion of that partnership.

On the customer acquisition side, David said that Carbonite had an “off the charts” number of new people join post-WPC last year. There is a challenge in this, however. David explained that getting too many customers/partners too quickly can degrade customer service, which is why the company is shifting their model to look for the right partner. It’s quality over quantity.

Finally, Carbonite recently moved into a hip new space in the heart of Boston’s rapidly-growing emerging tech space, dubbed the Innovation Center. This is a better fit for the tech company, with space to accommodate up to 400 employees. Carbonite is currently sitting at 250 people and counting.
