Today, ABI Research released predictions around the future of automotive technology, and in particluar, Ethernet-In-Vehicle. The research firm expects this trend to be in 1% of vehicles in 2014, and over 40% of vehicles by 2020.
According to ABI, the current standard for Ethernet in Vehicle, 100Mbps BroadR-Reach was created in 2011. Additional technologies in use today include BLE and 802.11ac Wi-Fi. The ABI research showed a parallel between the future of technology in the automobile and the future of technology in the home and business.
“The emergence of drive-by-wire, the explosion of in-vehicle sensors for ADAS and automated driving, and the adoption of connected infotainment, pose new challenges for in-vehicle networking technologies in terms of cost, bandwidth, cable harness weight, and complexity. Ethernet is now being considered as a replacement for legacy bus protocols such as MOST and FlexRay by car OEMs including BMW and Hyundai,” explained VP and practice director, Dominique Bonte, in a press release today.
ABI expects that this will allow traditional consumer technology organizations, such as Intel, Broadcom, and Qualcomm to enter new markets, which will begin to put pressure on existing automotive tech companies.
