Uber Secrets for Fall Attendees!

UberEveryone loves secrets. It somehow makes you feel you know something that others don’t know. LOL!

Long-time SMB Nation member Robert Nitrio shared a few Uber insights in preparation for the transportation needs of incoming attendees en route to Seattle for the 12th annual SMB Nation Fall conference this weekend (Sept 26-28).

First – he surfaced the Uber option as one of the transportation alternatives to consider for the ride form the airport to the host hotel. He shared:

If you are interested, Uber can provide lower cost rides to and from the event for SMB Nation attendees.  I used Uber when I went to ChannelCon in Phoenix and it worked very well for me.  Through CompTIA I received a $25 discount on my first ride, so that was a nice bonus.  As compared to a taxi or a town car, I saved around $30 before the discount and there are no tips involved.  Fares can be estimated from Point A to Point B on their website or by downloading their app.   Here is a link that explains how to estimate a fare:

If you think this might be worth telling the attendees about in a blog, I have a link that will give them a $30 credit on their first ride.  That link is:

There is one proviso regarding Seattle that is noteworthy.  The lower cost Uber services are not available at Seattle-Tacoma Airport.  Only the Uberblack and UberSUV services can be used when leaving the airport.  When leaving from the conference hotels and heading back to the airport, the lowest cost service – UberX – has an estimated fare of $37-$50.  When the $30 discount is applied that makes it a $7-$20 ride!  This could really be helpful to a lot of people so I thought I would pass this along in case you are interested in sending it out as an email blast.

Robert is tapping the disruptive megatrend about Uber that I wrote about here. Since that early April blog – Uber has added the Windows Phone app (search Uber in the Windows Store from your phone) so it’s not just an Apple or Android thing!

So what the secret? I can add value to Robert’s last observation. There are two ways to hire a lower cost Uber X when arriving at SeaTac Airport.

  1. Walk a ¼ mile to the light rail station, take the elevator down to street-level and then hail your Uber X using your app. You are off airport property at that point.
  2. Move the location pin the Uber application offsite (e.g. .25 mile away from SeaTac Airport). Then hail the Uber X vehicle. Then text the responding driver to “really” pick you up at the baggage claim area (e.g. Door #14).

And that how you can efficiently get from the airport to the SMB Nation Fall Conference.
