SMB Nation Blog

SMB Nation has been serving the Bainbridge Island area since 2001, providing IT Support such as technical helpdesk support, computer support, and consulting to small and medium-sized businesses.

Hour of Code Is Coming!

VFIDrawing from the “Pay It Forward” and “Send The Elevator Back Down” mantras that we should be embracing, there is a leadership opportunity to participate in the Hour of Code event being held at local schools in your area. The mission is simple. Every student in every school should have the opportunity to learn computer science. Period.

I heard about this event from two friends: West Sound Technology Association (WSTA) and also Microsoft’s Voices For Innovation (VFI) political trade association. The basic premise is that you, as an SMB IT Professional, participate in one of several ways: donation, buy clothing, teach or assist in coordinating an event at your kid’s school. The goal is to have 10 million people of all ages try an introduction to computer science for one hour.

So what could I realistically do? I’m not a coder. But I know my way around Salesforce.com at the coding/databeast (LOL database) levels. So I can do this. See below to learn more, and to join me in signing up for this effort.

December 9-15 is National Computer Science Education Week, and Voices for Innovation is part of a massive effort to bring an “Hour of Code” to 10 million students across the nation.

Sign Up for Hour of Code!

Thousands of volunteers—including VFI members—will be participating in a one-hour computer science tutorial designed to demystify “code” and show that anyone can learn the basics and be a creator and innovator. While the focus is on K-12, you can conduct an “Hour of Code” event at your workplace, with a Boy or Girl Scout troop, with a community group, and so on. Learn more and sign up now.
